Generally speaking, light duty blades (those with 1/4″ shanks) should be paired with light duty knife handles; medium duty blades (the majority of those with 3/8″ shanks) should be paired with medium duty handles, and the larger blades (such as #26 whittling blades, pull/razor saws, and certain other specialty use items, most of which also have 3/8 shanks) should be used with heavy duty knife handles. The blade shank is the squared off part of the blade that slots into the knife handle. It’s physically possible to fit 1/4″ shank into 3/8″ collet, but it’s not. Because light duty blades are mostly shorter than medium duty blades, the cutting edge of light duty blades may feel unnaturally close to the thicker collet of a medium duty handle.
